Overview
NEAR Protocol is a layer-1 blockchain built on a sharded proof-of-stake architecture. Its account model uses human-readable account names rather than raw cryptographic addresses, with rotatable access keys, and its product layer is organized around chain abstraction through NEAR Intents. Q3 2026 was defined by three threads: the general availability of Confidential Intents to all integrators, a push to position NEAR as the settlement and privacy layer for AI agents, and the first concrete steps of a post-quantum roadmap following the Q2 signing-scheme launch. Consumer-facing distribution also moved forward, with the tokenized US stocks and ETFs launch in late September on near.com.
Key Developments: Q3 2026
Confidential Intents reached general availability on July 7, opening confidential cross-chain execution to any builder using the NEAR Intents 1Click Swap API, after more than $2.6B in ZEC settled across NEAR Intents. Confidential Intents TVL reached approximately $160 million at quarter-end.
NEAR AI launched Staking for NEAR AI on July 30, letting users pay for confidential inference by staking NEAR, with all 43 models on NEAR AI accessible through staking. More than 750,000 NEAR has already been staked for inference.
The NEAR Foundation joined the x402 Foundation, the Linux Foundation body for open agent payments infrastructure, on July 14, alongside AWS, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa
A post-quantum security roadmap was published on August 24, building on the ML-DSA (Dilithium) signing scheme NEAR began supporting in Q2 2026
Top Level Accounts and Recovery Keys went live on September 21, giving users readable account names that are working accounts with recoverable keys
The Bitwise NEAR ETF launched on September 29. A separate governance proposal opened discussion on reducing annual issuance from 2.5% to 1.6%.
near.com began offering tokenized US stocks and ETFs on September 22, purchasable with stablecoins or any supported crypto from 30+ chains
Ecosystem
Protocol Upgrades and Scalability
Dynamic Resharding and Post-Quantum Signing: NEAR’s version 2.13 upgrade reached mainnet on July 20. Dynamic resharding allows the network to split shards automatically as demand grows, without requiring a separate coordinated protocol upgrade for each split. The release also introduced ML-DSA post-quantum account signing, allowing users to adopt quantum-resistant access keys while retaining their existing accounts and assets.
Post-Quantum Security Roadmap: In August, NEAR One published a broader roadmap covering signing efficiency, wallet support, consensus, and cross-chain infrastructure. The roadmap extends beyond the account-level signing delivered in July. Quantum-safe consensus was targeted for the end of 2027, subject to advances in cryptographic research, while post-quantum threshold signing for cross-chain transactions remained an open research challenge without a fixed delivery date.
SPICE: NEAR One published a technical deep dive on SPICE in September. The proposed architecture separates transaction ordering, data availability, and execution so that block production does not need to wait for transaction execution to complete. SPICE remained in development at quarter-end.
Top Level Accounts and Recovery Keys: NEAR introduced Top Level Accounts and Recovery Keys in September, extending its account offering with readable names and recovery functionality. These features support NEAR’s broader focus on accounts that users control directly, including accounts used by agents to hold and spend assets.
Privacy and Confidential Infrastructure
Confidential Intents Adoption: Confidential Intents became generally available to developers and protocols using the 1Click Swap API in July. On September 1, near.com made confidentiality the default experience across holdings, trades, payments, and yield. Confidential Intents TVL reached approximately $160 million at quarter-end, up roughly 463% QoQ.
near.com Product Expansion: near.com processed approximately $2.57 billion in Q3 volume, accounting for roughly one quarter of total Intents volume. By quarter-end, cumulative perpetual trading volume exceeded $150 million, four confidential yield vaults were available, and approximately 5 million NEAR was staked through the platform. These products broadened the frontend’s offering across trading, asset management, and yield.
Revenue Capture: The Intents fee switch continued directing a portion of swap fees toward NEAR buybacks. Cumulative fees exceeded $52 million, with more than $8 million captured by NEAR. In a post-quarter update dated October 6, lifetime fee capture stood at approximately 16.4%, compared with 11.5% in the Q2 report. Trailing 30-day capture was 28.4%, compared with 30.5% previously, indicating stronger lifetime retention alongside a lower recent capture rate.
SHIELD: NEAR developed SHIELD as an application-level security system for Intents. It screens the public onchain history of funds before confidential execution and can apply targeted delays or pauses to affected flows. NEAR reported that SHIELD rejected more than $50 million in attempted transfers linked to the Bitget hack in late September. This figure represents rejected transfer attempts, rather than recovered funds. The controls operate at the Intents application layer; NEAR Protocol remains permissionless.
AI and Agent Economy
Staking for NEAR AI: NEAR AI introduced a staking-based mechanism that generates recurring inference credits while users retain ownership of their underlying NEAR. More than 750,000 NEAR was staked for confidential inference. The product connects token holdings with ongoing compute access and provides a potential funding mechanism for applications and agents.
Inference Distribution: NEAR AI Cloud expanded distribution through OpenRouter, allowing developers to access its inference offering through an existing API key and balance. The integration reduces the additional setup required for applications already using the gateway.
The Agent Economy: NEAR published its thesis that agent-driven commerce is far larger than payments, and that the infrastructure chosen in this cycle will decide whether users own their agents and data. The post describes NEAR's intended integrated stack for agents, covering identity, liquidity, private inference, confidential execution, settlement, governance, and economics, and frames the NEAR token's role in that system as one of the "AI money" thesis.
Formal Verification: NEAR AI reported that its open-source Lean agent solved all 672 PutnamBench problems for $111. The result demonstrates progress in automated theorem proving, supporting NEAR’s longer-term work toward formal verification of the protocol, core contracts, and ecosystem applications.
x402 Foundation: The NEAR Foundation joined the x402 Foundation in July, supporting open infrastructure for agent payments. The participation complements NEAR’s work across cross-chain liquidity, confidential execution, and private inference.
Partnerships and Integrations
Wallets and Trading Platforms: Intents distribution expanded through integrations including Infinex, Meteor Wallet, THORWallet, Stargate, and Solflare. These integrations brought cross-chain execution and, where supported, confidentiality into additional wallet and trading interfaces.
Payments and Agent Applications: Splits integrated Confidential Intents for private payments covering payroll, contractors, and treasury operations. Bloom integrated NEAR Intents into its walletFS infrastructure, allowing AI agents to execute cross-chain swaps with user approval before funds move. Additional integrations included Artisan Cash for real-world payments and LeoDex’s AnyPay functionality.
Tokenized Assets: near.com expanded its trading offering through Ondo, adding access to tokenized real-world assets, including equities and ETFs. Users could fund purchases with supported crypto assets across more than 30 chains, with confidential execution.
Institutional Access and Tokenomics: The Bitwise NEAR ETF began trading on September 29, expanding access to NEAR through U.S. brokerage accounts. Separately, a governance proposal opened discussion on lowering annual issuance from 2.5% to 1.6%.
Onchain Data
Daily Transactions

Source: NEAR official data, BigQuery
NEAR processed approximately 68.0 million transactions across Q3 2026, averaging about 739,000 per day. The daily low was 584,733 on August 15, and the peak was 1,217,209 on September 27, with the highest values clustered in late September. The series does not show what drove that rise, and the Top Level Accounts (September 21) and tokenized-equities (September 22) launches fall in the same period.
Daily Active Addresses

Source: NEAR official data, BigQuery
Daily active addresses are defined here as distinct signer accounts per day. NEAR averaged approximately 79,300 distinct signers per day in Q3 2026, ranging from 42,517 on September 16 to 106,771 on July 6.
Top Entities by Transactions

Source: Nansen
Ranked by Nansen entity transaction count for Q3 2026, the leading entities are HOT Wallet, Ref Finance, Near, Pyth, Tether, Meta Pool, Burrow, Sweat, Kaikai, and LiNEAR Protocol. Ref Finance holds the second position and is the DEX entity with the highest rank in the set. These counts cover labelled entity activity only, so they are a subset of NEAR's total and do not sum to the official totals above.
Top Entities by Users

Source: Nansen
Ranked by Nansen entity user count for Q3 2026, the leading entities are HOT Wallet, Near, Tether, Sweat, Binance, Burrow, Ref Finance, KuCoin, Meta Pool, and LiNEAR Protocol. HOT Wallet is first on both rankings. Binance and KuCoin appear in the top ten by users but sit at 11th and 12th by transactions, so their user reach is larger than their transaction rank suggests.
Closing Thoughts
Q3 2026 was a quarter where NEAR's messaging shifted from protocol mechanics toward products and positioning. Intents processed approximately $10.4 billion in quarterly volume, cumulative revenue captured for NEAR buybacks exceeded $8 million. Confidential balances expanded, while partner integrations extended distribution across wallets, trading platforms, payments, and agent applications. The quarter also delivered dynamic resharding and post-quantum account signing on mainnet. Staking for inference added a direct use for NEAR within the AI offering, while the Bitwise ETF introduced a new investment access channel.
The post-quantum roadmap and Top Level Accounts with Recovery Keys enables accounts and assets under the control of their owners as cryptographic and platform risks change. These are roadmap and launch announcements, and their adoption will need to be tracked in Q4 2026.
Looking ahead, the key measures are sustained Intents volume and revenue capture, repeat usage of near.com’s broader products, demand for private inference, and whether network participation recovers alongside transaction activity.
